“A new kind of school is opening in the Lowcountry in August,” ABC Good Morning Charleston anchor Leah Uko told viewers in a lengthy feature story about Lowcountry Acceleration Academy that also appeared on the WCIV Ch. 4 evening news.
Reporter Tara Jabour interviewed two incoming graduation candidates, a mom, LAA Director Dr. Jacinta Bryant and Life Coach Jack Caulder about the non-traditional school that will offer learners a personalized, flexible path to their high school diploma — at no cost to students or their families.
Tyler Shensky studied in an online public school during the Covid-19 pandemic and did well. But his mom, Jennifer, said her son had too much time on his hands and wanted a bigger challenge.
“He’s always been a pretty independent kid, so I feel like he would do well in this environment where it’s self-paced and he can choose his own path,” she said. Tyler said he is “excited” and looking forward to diving deep into learning about computers and technology.
Another incoming graduation candidate, Jamari Green, is hoping to accelerate her studies and graduate this year. Jamari said, “After a while of not being in school, I decided I wanted to have a future and actually do something in life and go to college.”
Caulder and Dr. Bryant said that LAA will meet learnings where they are, taking a path that is just right for them, and features not only academic coaching but also social, emotional and other support.
“We are here to fit the needs of the student,” said Dr. Bryant. “It is not a one size fits all.”
